Want something to do on a rainy or cold weather day? We suggest making homemade play dough! You can take this basic recipe and add a flavored extract such as peppermint or spices such as pumpkin pie mix to make it holiday themed. This activity will help develop upper extremity/hand strength and dexterity for all ages, and executive function skills for children old enough to follow the recipe. Enjoy!
- 2 cups water
- 1 and ½ cups flour
- 1 cup salt
- ¼ cup cream of tartar
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Mix all ingredients in medium saucepan. Cook about 5 minutes on medium heat, stirring constantly until mixture comes together. Remove from heat. Scrape dough onto wax paper and cool. Knead until dough is smooth. You can now roll into shapes, use cookie cutters to make shapes, toothpicks to draw designs, and more. The best part? You can reuse over and over again!
Store in an airtight container for up to 4 weeks.
